Doug is a Kentucky Hero that is "Still serving..." his country by serving his community and neighbors! He is a wonderful supporter of the Kentucky Veterans of the Year, and is a great advocate for veterans. Doug's positive attitude towards his Nation and his veterans makes him an outstanding candidate for the Kentucky Veterans of the Year. Thank you, Doug!!
Doug was nominated by Mike DiGiuro. This is what Mike had to say about Doug. His nomination below is unedited and unredacted.
Doug, a combat veteran of Vietnam, is the current President of Honor Flight Bluegrass, an organization dedicated to flying WWII, Korea, and Vietnam veterans to Washington DC to see their memorials. Doug has hosted veterans on 16 Honor Flights. For the last two years, he has been Mission Commander on 4 flights. His efforts at Honor Flight Bluegrass are unmatched. Through his dedication, over 2000 local Kentucky veterans have enjoyed what is often described as the best day of their life. The required effort to put on an Honor Flight is enormous. From the biggest details, like chartering a 185 seat airplane, and 4 busses for each trip, to insuring the veterans and their guardians are fed, have the necessary wheelchairs, oxygen and medical attention if needed; every detail is insured. No detail is too small when you are insuring the safety of men and women in their late 80’s and 90’s From public speaking to raise awareness among veterans about Honor Flight and fund raising to finance the flight - he is a tireless advocate. Doug recognizes Honor Flight as the best and last chance to honor a dwindling population of heroes; many of whom never got the recognition they so deserve. Honor Flight Bluegrass is made up of lots of people, doing lots of work; but Doug is the catalyst and shoulders most of the detail work. I can imagine no other person more worthy of Kentucky Veteran of the Year.
